Centroamericano (H1)

Centroamericano, also known as H1, is a first-generation F1 Arabica hybrid created from the rust-resistant T5296 line and the Ethiopian landrace Rume Sudan. World Coffee Research describes it as compact, highly rust-resistant, very high yielding and capable of very good cup quality when carefully managed at higher elevations. Because F1 seed does not reproduce true to type, it should be propagated clonally through trusted nurseries.

Where did it come from?

Developed by a consortium including CIRAD, CATIE and Central American national coffee institutes, Centroamericano was released to farmers in 2010. It combines T5296’s rust resistance with Rume Sudan’s Ethiopian genetic background.

What does it tend to taste like?

Very good specialty-cup potential at higher elevations; the Kape'tenango washed release is described with blood orange, tamarind and juniper.

Plant characteristics

Compact plant with green leaf tips, large beans, very high yield potential and first production in year two. Requires high nutrition and careful root establishment.

Why producers grow it

Very high yields, strong rust resistance, early production and very good high-altitude quality potential.
