Ombligon
Ombligon is an emerging Colombian Arabica variety named from the Spanish word ombligo, or navel, because its cherries show a protruding tip. Its pedigree has not been conclusively traced. Klatch notes that early Ethiopian-origin theories have given way to suggestions of spontaneous cross-pollination among varieties already grown in Colombia, but presents that as a developing hypothesis rather than settled fact.
Where did it come from?
The variety has gained attention through Colombian competition coffees and experimental lots. It is especially associated with Huila, although the documented Red Dragon lot was grown in Santuario, Risaralda.
What does it tend to taste like?
Lot-dependent; Klatch's Red Dragon and its Coffee Review assessment emphasize rose, jasmine, hibiscus, red currant, blood orange, black cherry and dark chocolate.
Plant characteristics
Cherries have a visible protrusion at one end, resembling a navel. Reliable public agronomic data remain limited.
Why producers grow it
Its floral, fruit-saturated cup potential and rarity have made it attractive for microlots and competition-focused releases.
