Hacienda Carmona

The story

Hacienda Carmona dates back to 1541 and was established by Don Juan de Carmona. The Zelaya family later took ownership, introducing Arabica coffee to the estate in the late 1800s. Maria Zelaya Aguirre, a third-generation owner, has managed the farm since 1959, maintaining the family legacy.

Challenges

The region surrounding Antigua is subject to periodic volcanic eruptions approximately every 30 years, which can devastate the local area.

Innovations

The farm utilizes a dedicated beneficio for processing and maintains original coffee varieties planted in the 1800s to preserve the estate's distinct flavor profile.
