Jarama Coffee Washing Station

The story

Jarama is a 56-acre estate and coffee washing station located in the Gihombo sector of Rwanda's Nyamasheke District. It is operated by the Kivubelt group, which was established in 2011 by Furaha Umwizeye after she returned to Rwanda from Switzerland. The station was acquired by Kivubelt to process coffee from their own estates as well as cherries produced by surrounding smallholder farmers.

Challenges

The station operates in a region where smallholder farmers often cultivate coffee at high elevations, requiring the washing station to manage logistics and quality control across diverse local plots.

Innovations

Kivubelt utilizes the Jarama station to capture and process high-quality coffee from surrounding smallholders, integrating them into a boutique production model that emphasizes standardized processing and quality.
