Shyira washing station

The story

The Shyira washing station was established in 2017 by the Muraho Trading Company in the Nyabihu region of Rwanda. It was built to expand the selling potential for local coffee growers and currently serves nearly 1,900 smallholder farmers. The station is notable for being one of the highest-altitude processing facilities in the country.

Challenges

The station is located in a remote area with difficult terrain, requiring farmers to carry cherries down narrow mountain paths. The region's high altitude and steep slopes present logistical hurdles for transport and infrastructure maintenance.

Innovations

Shyira utilizes advanced processing techniques such as anaerobic and anoxic fermentation to create unique flavor profiles. The station also supports local economic stability by providing seasonal employment and ensuring that a significant portion of the workforce consists of women.
