History

Established in the late 20th century, the Gikanda Farmers Cooperative Society was formed to support local farmers by centralizing processing and improving market access. The name Gikanda is a portmanteau representing the three areas it serves: Gichathaini, Kangema, and Kandara. The Gichathaini wet mill is situated near the town of Karatina, benefiting from the fertile volcanic soils between the Aberdare Mountain Range and Mount Kenya.
