Thousands of Ethiopian smallholder producers
Ethiopian smallholder producers are the backbone of the country's coffee industry, responsible for approximately 95% of total national coffee production. These farmers typically cultivate coffee on small plots of land, often less than two hectares, and rely on coffee as their primary cash crop and source of sustenance.
History
Ethiopia is recognized as the origin of Arabica coffee, with a history of high-quality production dating back to the 19th century. Smallholder farmers have historically utilized traditional techniques, though many have increasingly integrated into cooperative structures to improve market access and governance. In recent years, programs like the Cup of Excellence have been introduced to further support these farmers by providing direct market access and rewarding quality.
