Carlos Guamanga

Carlos Guamanga is a prominent coffee producer whose journey in the industry reflects the resilience and ambition characteristic of many smallholder farmers in Colombia. Originally from a small town in the Cauca department, Guamanga moved to Huila at the age of 16 in search of better economic opportunities. His early years were defined by hard work as a coffee picker, an experience that allowed him to observe diverse farming practices and develop a deep, practical understanding of coffee production, including roasting and cupping standards.

After years of gaining experience in the field, Guamanga and his wife, Pato, established their own farm, Finca El Recuerdo, in the Huila department. Over the past 12 years, the farm has evolved from a family endeavor into a hub for agricultural innovation. Situated at an elevation of approximately 1,800 meters above sea level, the farm benefits from the unique microclimates of the Huila region, which is widely considered one of Colombia's most significant specialty coffee origins.

At Finca El Recuerdo, Guamanga manages the cultivation of multiple coffee varieties, most notably Caturra and Pink Bourbon. His approach to production is defined by a focus on allowing the inherent characteristics of the variety and the farm's terroir to shine through in the final cup. This is achieved through meticulous post-harvest processing, with a particular emphasis on washed processing methods that highlight clean, floral, and sweet flavor profiles, often described as having notes of panela and cherry.

Beyond his technical skill, Guamanga is noted for his commitment to sustainable farming. He and his wife prioritize practices that minimize their environmental footprint, aiming to protect the surrounding forests and the land they cultivate. Guamanga’s work has gained international recognition through partnerships with specialty coffee exporters and roasters, such as Azahar, which utilizes a dynamic pricing model to ensure producers receive stable, fair compensation. These relationships have allowed his coffee to reach global markets, where it is frequently featured by roasters who value his dedication to quality and his consistent output of high-scoring lots.
