Eugene P. Altieri

Eugene P. Altieri, an Italian-American entrepreneur who moved to Panama in 1973, founded Altieri Specialty Coffee in 2005. Initially, Altieri acquired two farms in the Boquete region without specific intentions for specialty coffee production. Over the past two decades, however, the enterprise has evolved into a significant name in the global specialty market, driven by a commitment to high-quality cultivation and community development.

The family-owned operation manages two primary estates, Mima and Pipim, located in the high-altitude areas of Alto Quiel and Alto Lino. These farms benefit from the unique microclimates of the Boquete region, which is world-renowned for producing exceptional coffee. The Mima Estate, in particular, is noted for its Geisha plantings, with specific sections of the farm named after Eugene’s grandchildren.

Altieri Specialty Coffee is perhaps best known for its Geisha variety, a cultivar that has become synonymous with Panamanian coffee excellence. The farm’s lineage for this variety is notable; Eugene Altieri sourced his initial Geisha seeds from the Peterson family of Hacienda La Esmeralda, the pioneers who famously reintroduced the variety to the global stage in 2004. Beyond Geisha, the farms cultivate Caturra, Catuai, and Typica, often experimenting with advanced processing methods such as anaerobic natural fermentation.

Following Eugene’s semi-retirement approximately seven years ago, the day-to-day operations of the business transitioned to his children, including Anna Lynn and Francisco, who work alongside farm manager Roger Pitti. This generational transition has maintained the farm's focus on quality while expanding the brand's international reach. The family maintains a hands-on approach, emphasizing direct relationships with roasters and consumers.

Beyond the technical aspects of coffee production, the Altieri family is recognized for their commitment to social responsibility. The farm provides various initiatives for its workers, including housing, healthcare, and educational support for employees' families. This focus on the human element of coffee production is a core pillar of their business philosophy, aiming to uplift the local community alongside their commercial success.

The farm’s dedication to quality has been validated through consistent recognition in the Best of Panama competition, where their lots frequently place among the top entries. These accolades have solidified their reputation among specialty roasters worldwide, who prize the Altieri name for its reliability and the distinct flavor profiles—ranging from floral and citrus notes in their washed Geishas to the complex, fruity characteristics of their anaerobic Catuai—that define their output.
