Quick answer — what is Finca Nuguo?

Finca Nuguo is a highly acclaimed, small-scale coffee farm in the Jurutungo region of Panama, owned by José “Pocho” Gallardo. It is globally recognized for producing exceptional Geisha coffee that consistently dominates high-level specialty coffee competitions, including the Best of Panama and the World Brewers Cup.

The real story

Finca Nuguo is a distinguished coffee estate located in the remote Jurutungo area of the Renacimiento district in Panama’s Chiriquí province. Unlike many of Panama’s famous coffee estates clustered around Boquete and Volcán, Nuguo sits near the border of Costa Rica, adjacent to La Amistad International Park, the largest rainforest reserve in Central America. This unique microclimate, characterized by high elevations between 1,750 and 2,000 meters, cool temperatures, and significant rainfall, provides the environmental foundation for the farm's high-quality output.

The farm is owned and operated by the Gallardo family, with José “Pocho” Gallardo serving as the primary agricultural visionary. While the family has been involved in coffee production since the 1960s, Pocho shifted the farm's focus toward the Geisha variety approximately sixteen years ago. His approach to farming is defined by an uncompromising focus on cherry quality over volume, resulting in an intentionally small annual production of only a few hundred kilograms.

Pocho’s cultivation philosophy includes a unique method he refers to as the “Gesha Forest.” By allowing trees to grow with minimal pruning over many years, he encourages the development of thick, strong trunks and deep root systems. This approach, combined with the farm's high-altitude, nutrient-rich soil, allows the trees to produce mature, complex cherries that are highly sought after by specialty roasters and competition baristas worldwide.

Processing at Finca Nuguo is meticulous and often involves specialized techniques to manage the challenging, high-humidity environment of Jurutungo. While washed coffees undergo a 40-hour fermentation in wooden boxes, the farm is also known for its natural-processed lots. Due to the intense, persistent rainfall in the region, drying can be an arduous, months-long process. To ensure stability, the farm sometimes utilizes controlled drying environments in lower-altitude cities to reach the final moisture content required for export.

The farm’s reputation is cemented by its consistent performance on the global stage. Finca Nuguo has achieved top placements in the Best of Panama competition, including sweeping first and second place in the Geisha categories in 2021. Its coffee has also been featured in winning routines at the World Brewers Cup, most notably in 2026, and has been utilized by national and world-level barista champions, establishing Pocho Gallardo as one of the most revered producers in the industry.

For the drinker and the roaster, Finca Nuguo represents the pinnacle of Panamanian Geisha, often characterized by intense floral notes of jasmine and rose, alongside bright acidity and tropical fruit sweetness. The farm’s story is one of extreme dedication to terroir and innovative, small-batch processing, proving that even a five-hectare farm can exert a massive influence on the global specialty coffee market.
