Finca Sierra Morena is a specialty coffee farm located in Palestina, Huila, Colombia, managed by producer Wilson Alba. The farm is recognized for its high-altitude cultivation of varieties like Pink Bourbon, emphasizing a return to traditional coffee production through modern specialty practices.
Finca Sierra Morena is a 25-hectare coffee farm situated in the Palestina region of Huila, Colombia, at an altitude of approximately 1,750 meters above sea level. The farm is currently managed by Wilson Alba, who has been instrumental in revitalizing the property's coffee-growing legacy. The estate is characterized by its dramatically steep topography, which presents unique challenges and opportunities for cultivation, particularly regarding the management of coffee trees and soil health.
The history of Finca Sierra Morena is deeply rooted in the Alba family. The land originally belonged to Wilson Alba’s grandfather, who operated a smaller six-hectare plot. Following his passing, the farm was inherited by Wilson’s father, who expanded the property by acquiring adjacent land. Wilson and his four brothers grew up working on this expanded estate, gaining foundational experience in agricultural management and coffee production before the family collectively invested in further land expansion.
A significant shift in the farm's trajectory occurred in 2003, when the family moved away from coffee production to focus on fruit cultivation and cattle ranching. During this period, Wilson Alba remained in charge of the farm's operations. This transition lasted over a decade, during which the traditional coffee-growing practices of the previous generations were largely set aside in favor of diversified agricultural activities.
In 2016, Wilson Alba’s perspective on the farm’s potential changed after he was introduced to the specialty coffee sector. Recognizing the quality potential of his land, he decided to return to the family’s original coffee tradition. He began by planting approximately six hectares of coffee, a project that has since grown into a focused operation featuring thousands of trees, including notable varieties such as Pink Bourbon.
Today, the farm is noted for its commitment to quality, with recent harvests—such as the 2025 third-harvest lot—receiving recognition for their bright, crisp acidity and complex flavor profiles, often described as having notes of red currant and lemonade. The farm’s current success is a result of Wilson Alba’s dedication to specialty standards, which involves meticulous attention to harvest passes and processing techniques to ensure the final cup reflects the unique terroir of the Huila region.
For the specialty coffee industry, Finca Sierra Morena serves as a compelling example of the 'return to coffee' movement, where producers leverage ancestral land and family knowledge to pivot toward high-value, specialty-grade production. By focusing on specific varieties and rigorous quality control, Wilson Alba has successfully transitioned the farm from a diversified agricultural plot back into a respected source of high-quality Colombian coffee.
