Established in 1963, the year of Kenya’s independence, the Gachatha Coffee Factory is located in the Karundu area of Nyeri County. It sits on the slopes of the Aberdare Mountain Range at an elevation between 1,800 and 2,100 meters above sea level. The factory serves a community of over 1,500 smallholder farmers residing in the surrounding villages of Muthuaini, Thiriku, Gachenge, and Kianjau. These farmers typically manage small plots, often averaging around 0.4 hectares with approximately 300 trees each, contributing to a collective effort that has made Nyeri one of the most prestigious coffee-producing regions globally.

The cooperative is known for its commitment to the traditional Kenyan washed processing method. After harvesting, cherries are delivered to the factory, where they undergo depulping and washing. The factory employs nine permanent staff members and hires roughly 25 seasonal workers to manage the intensive labor required during the harvest periods, which typically occur from May to July and October to December. The resulting coffee is highly regarded for its distinct profile, often featuring notes of blackcurrant, red citrus, grapefruit, and jasmine, supported by a silky, tea-like mouthfeel and sparkling, winey acidity.

Varietal diversity is a hallmark of the Gachatha output. The smallholder members cultivate a mix of classic and modern varieties, including SL-28, SL-34, Ruiru 11, and Batian. These varieties thrive in the region's deep, fertile volcanic soils and cool, high-altitude climate. The combination of these specific cultivars and the meticulous processing at the factory level ensures the high-quality standards that allow the cooperative to consistently produce 'AA' grade lots, which are highly sought after by specialty roasters worldwide.

Environmental stewardship is a core operational focus for the Gachatha Farmers Cooperative Society. Given the high population density of the surrounding area, the factory prioritizes the protection of local natural resources. They utilize dedicated soaking pits to treat all wastewater generated during the processing of coffee cherries, ensuring that no contaminants leach into local waterways, which serve as vital drinking water sources for the community. Furthermore, the cooperative emphasizes the preservation of indigenous trees to maintain local biodiversity and protect bird habitats.

For the roaster and the drinker, Gachatha represents the pinnacle of the Kenyan specialty coffee experience.
