The Gathaithi Coffee Factory is a prominent wet mill in Nyeri County, Kenya, that processes cherries for over 1,600 smallholder farmers. It is highly regarded in the specialty coffee industry for producing high-quality, flavor-dense Kenyan lots characterized by intense acidity and complex berry notes.
The Gathaithi Coffee Factory, established in 1967, serves as a vital processing hub for the Gathaithi Farmers’ Cooperative Society in Nyeri County, Kenya. Located in the central highlands, the factory acts as a central collection point for 1,656 smallholder members. Each member typically manages a small plot of land, averaging about half an acre, which supports approximately 120 coffee trees. This cooperative structure is foundational to the Kenyan coffee industry, allowing small-scale producers to aggregate their harvests for consistent processing and access to international markets.
The region surrounding the factory is defined by its high elevation, often exceeding 1,700 meters above sea level, and nutrient-rich red volcanic soils. These environmental factors, combined with the region's specific rainfall patterns and cool temperatures, create an ideal climate for the slow maturation of coffee cherries. This environment is widely credited for the intense, complex, and flavor-dense cup profiles that have made Nyeri coffees a staple for specialty roasters globally.
At the factory, the processing of coffee follows the traditional, rigorous Kenyan washed method. Farmers deliver hand-picked cherries to the station on the same day they are harvested. The cherries undergo a meticulous process of sorting, pulping, and overnight fermentation. Following fermentation, the coffee is washed and soaked to ensure clarity of flavor. The parchment is then dried on raised beds for a period of 7 to 15 days, during which staff continuously turn and sort the beans to ensure uniform moisture content and quality.
The primary varieties cultivated by the cooperative members are the iconic SL28 and SL34 cultivars, which account for approximately 95% of the production. These varieties are celebrated for their vibrant acidity and deep fruit characteristics. In recent years, the cooperative has also incorporated smaller amounts of the disease-resistant hybrids Ruiru 11 and Batian, reflecting a broader trend in Kenyan agriculture to balance traditional quality with long-term farm sustainability.
Sustainability and environmental stewardship are central to the factory's operations. Gathaithi holds multiple environmental certifications and actively promotes practices such as tree planting and improved wastewater management. By managing processing water through dedicated systems, the factory works to protect local water sources, which are essential for the surrounding communities. This commitment to the land is matched by the factory's consistent output, which reaches approximately 60 tonnes of clean coffee annually, with the infrastructure capacity to potentially double that volume.
For the specialty coffee drinker, Gathaithi is synonymous with the classic Nyeri profile: a bright, sweet, and complex cup often featuring notes of cranberry, currants, and other dark berries. The factory's ability to maintain this high standard through its cooperative model ensures that the individual efforts of over 1,600 farmers are preserved in the final product. As a result, Gathaithi remains a respected name in the supply chain, representing the intersection of traditional Kenyan processing expertise and the dedication of smallholder agriculture.
