Kii Factory

The Kii Factory is a cornerstone of coffee production in the Kirinyaga region of Kenya, situated at the base of Mount Kenya. Established in the mid-1990s, the facility is one of three washing stations—alongside Karimikui and Kiangoi—owned and operated by the Rungeto Farmers Cooperative Society (FCS). The factory derives its name from the nearby Kii River, which provides the essential water supply for its rigorous wet-processing operations. The cooperative serves a large community of smallholder farmers, with membership estimates ranging from 850 to over 1,200 active participants who rely on the factory to process their harvests.

Smallholder farmers delivering to Kii typically manage very small plots of land, often less than one hectare, with an average of 200 to 400 coffee trees per farmer. The region is characterized by high altitudes, generally between 1,300 and 1,900 meters above sea level, and rich volcanic soil. These environmental factors, combined with the cultivation of traditional and resilient Arabica varieties such as SL28, SL34, Batian, and Ruiru 11, create the foundation for the complex, acidic, and fruit-forward flavor profiles for which Kii coffee is known.

In practice, the Kii Factory functions as a central hub for quality control. Farmers hand-pick ripe cherries and deliver them to the factory, where they undergo a strict sorting process to remove under-ripe or damaged fruit. The coffee is then depulped, fermented overnight in tanks, washed, and often soaked to enhance clarity. A defining feature of the factory's commitment to quality is its infrastructure; recent years have seen investments in tiled fermentation channels and water recycling systems, which help maintain consistency and environmental sustainability.

Following the wet-processing stage, the coffee is dried on raised beds for approximately two weeks. This slow, controlled drying is critical to the final cup quality. Once dried, the coffee is milled to meet the Kenyan grading system, with 'AA' being a common classification for the larger, high-quality beans produced at the site. This precise dry milling ensures uniform bean size, which roasters prize for its ability to produce a balanced and expressive cup, often noted for stone fruit and grapefruit acidity.

For the farmer, the Kii Factory provides a vital link to international specialty markets that might otherwise be inaccessible. By pooling their resources through the Rungeto FCS, these smallholders can achieve the scale and quality standards necessary to command higher prices. The cooperative is managed by an elected board, ensuring that the interests of the member farmers remain central to the factory's operations and its ongoing efforts to improve yields and quality.

For roasters and consumers, the Kii Factory tag represents a hallmark of reliability in the Kenyan coffee sector. Because the factory maintains high standards year after year, it has become a sought-after origin for specialty roasters globally. The consistency of the 'Kii profile'—often described as juicy, sweet, and vibrant—is a direct result of the cooperative's focus on technical precision at every stage of the post-harvest process.
