Mountain Harvest

Mountain Harvest was established in 2017 with a mission to challenge the status quo of coffee production in Uganda. Operating primarily out of the Central Region with headquarters in Kampala, the organization was founded to address the systemic issues facing Ugandan coffee, which has historically struggled with a negative reputation in the international specialty market. By focusing on rigorous quality control and sustainable partnerships, Mountain Harvest aims to prove that Ugandan Arabica can compete at the highest levels of the global industry.

The organization operates primarily on the fertile, high-elevation slopes of Mount Elgon and the Rwenzori Mountains. These regions provide a unique terroir that, when combined with the cultivation of high-quality cultivars, allows for the production of complex, specialty-grade coffee. Mountain Harvest works directly with hundreds of smallholder farmers, providing them with the infrastructure and training necessary to improve both their crop quality and their overall economic stability.

A core pillar of the Mountain Harvest model is the commitment to a living income for producers. Recognizing that many young people in rural Uganda have historically abandoned coffee farming for more profitable urban labor, the company implements programs designed to make coffee cultivation a viable, long-term career. This includes financial literacy training and initiatives to diversify farm income, such as the integration of beehives and avocado trees, which also support regenerative agricultural practices.

In practice, Mountain Harvest functions as both a producer and an exporter, managing the processing of coffee to ensure it meets specialty standards. They utilize various processing methods—including washed, natural, and honey processes—to highlight the distinct characteristics of the coffee grown in their partner communities. By maintaining a direct link between the farm and the roaster, they ensure that the value generated by high-quality coffee is returned to the farmers who cultivate it.
