Muungano Cooperative

The Muungano Cooperative, whose name translates to “togetherness” in Swahili, was established in 2009 in the South Kivu province of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. It began with 350 founding members from diverse ethnic groups—including the Bahunde, Bahavu, Bashi, and Batembo—who sought to overcome the fractures caused by years of civil conflict. By organizing into a formal cooperative, these farmers transitioned from risky, informal trade across Lake Kivu to a structured, collective model that prioritizes community stability and economic development.

Geographically, the cooperative operates on the high-altitude, volcanic slopes overlooking the western shores of Lake Kivu. This region provides an ideal microclimate for Arabica coffee, characterized by rich soil and significant elevation, typically ranging from 1,300 to 2,000 meters. Farmers utilize traditional agroforestry techniques, intercropping coffee trees with shade and fruit trees to naturally fertilize the soil, prevent erosion, and provide secondary income streams for their families.

Since its inception, Muungano has grown significantly, now representing over 4,000 smallholder farmers. The cooperative’s infrastructure has evolved from rudimentary, early-twentieth-century equipment to a modern operation featuring multiple washing stations, including four main facilities and three micro-stations. These investments, supported by international partners and financing organizations, have allowed the cooperative to implement rigorous quality control, including the establishment of an on-site cupping lab and the training of professional staff.

Gender equity is a cornerstone of the cooperative’s mission. In a country where women perform the vast majority of agricultural labor, Muungano has actively worked to ensure women are represented in leadership and receive fair financial returns. Nearly half of the cooperative’s membership is female, and the organization frequently collaborates with social initiatives to address gender-based disparities and improve the overall well-being of the farming communities.

Muungano is primarily known for producing high-quality, fully washed Arabica coffee, with Bourbon being a dominant variety. The resulting cup profiles are frequently noted for their bright acidity, complex sweetness, and notes of dark chocolate, lemongrass, and bergamot. These characteristics have made their lots highly sought after by specialty roasters globally, often serving as a benchmark for the potential of Congolese coffee in international markets.

Beyond production, the cooperative maintains Organic and Fair Trade certifications, which serve as a testament to their commitment to environmental stewardship and ethical labor practices. By providing technical training and monitoring, the cooperative helps its members navigate the logistical challenges of the region, such as transport across Lake Kivu to Goma for milling and export. Today, Muungano stands as a model for how coffee can serve as a vehicle for peace-building and economic resilience in post-conflict regions.
