Tamiru Tadesse Tesema is a prominent Ethiopian coffee producer and the owner of Alo Coffee in the Bensa district of the Sidama region. He is widely recognized for his mastery of advanced processing techniques, such as anaerobic fermentation and cold-fermentation, which have consistently produced award-winning, high-scoring coffees, including a first-place finish in the 2021 Ethiopia Cup of Excellence.
Tamiru Tadesse Tesema is a central figure in the contemporary specialty coffee scene of Ethiopia, operating out of the Bensa district in the Sidama region. As the owner of Alo Coffee, he has established himself as a leader in micro-lot development, focusing on precise, innovative processing methods that highlight the unique terroir of his region. His work is characterized by a commitment to quality that has garnered international acclaim, most notably his victory in the 2021 Ethiopia Cup of Excellence, which brought significant global attention to his production methods.
Tamiru’s operations are deeply rooted in the local community of Delo Kebele. He functions as a vital link in the supply chain, working directly with approximately 200 smallholder farmers. By managing the collection of red cherries from roughly 80 hectares of land, he ensures that the raw material meets the rigorous standards required for his high-end processing protocols. This collaborative model allows him to maintain oversight of the coffee from the harvest stage through to the final drying process.
Processing is the hallmark of Tamiru’s reputation. He is known for his expertise in anaerobic natural and washed processes, as well as specialized techniques like cold fermentation and submerge fermentation. For instance, his anaerobic natural lots often involve placing hand-selected, ripe cherries into sealed tanks with 'mosto'—a concentrated coffee juice—for extended periods, such as 96 hours. This meticulous control over fermentation parameters is designed to unlock complex aromatic profiles, often resulting in intense notes of tropical fruit, lychee, and floral aromatics.
Beyond his competition success, Tamiru is a frequent collaborator with specialty roasters worldwide, who seek out his lots for their clarity and depth. His coffees, often derived from JARC-developed varieties like 74158 and 74165, are frequently featured in high-end competition series and exclusive roaster offerings. These coffees are typically grown at high elevations, ranging from 2,100 to over 2,400 meters above sea level, which contributes to the slow maturation and high density of the beans.
In practice, Tamiru’s approach involves a rigorous selection process. Cherries are floated to remove defects and de-pulped with precision, sometimes leaving specific amounts of mucilage to influence the final cup profile. Drying is conducted on raised beds, often under shade, to ensure a slow and even moisture reduction. This level of technical detail has made his 'Alo Village' and other specific lots highly sought after by professionals who value consistency and experimental flavor profiles.
For the drinker and the roaster, the 'Tamiru Tadesse' tag represents a benchmark for modern Ethiopian specialty coffee. It signifies a product that has been handled with extreme care, bridging the gap between traditional Ethiopian heirloom quality and the cutting-edge science of fermentation. His ongoing work continues to push the boundaries of what is possible in the Bensa region, cementing his status as a producer who successfully balances large-scale community impact with the exacting demands of the global specialty market.
