Arsosala Washing Station

The story

The Arsosala Washing Station was established in the Uraga district of the Guji zone in either 2015 or 2016. It functions as a central processing facility for approximately 800 to 1,200 smallholder farmers who cultivate coffee on small garden plots averaging two hectares. These farmers began growing coffee in the region relatively recently compared to other parts of Ethiopia.

Challenges

Farmers in the region face difficulties related to the relatively recent introduction of coffee cultivation in the area. Additionally, the station must manage the inherent risks of the washed process, such as potential water contamination and the need for precise fermentation control to avoid flavor taints.

Innovations

The station provides incentives such as premium pricing and credit services to farmers to encourage the delivery of high-quality cherries. They also offer training programs to local producers to enhance overall coffee productivity and quality.
