The Banko Gotiti washing station was established around 2010-2012 in the Gedeo zone of Ethiopia. It operates as a central processing hub for hundreds of local smallholder farmers who cultivate coffee on small garden plots, often less than one hectare in size. The station has evolved from serving local producers to managing direct export relationships to maintain quality control.

Challenges

Farmers and the station face logistical difficulties due to the remote, mountainous terrain of the Gedeb district. Additionally, producers must navigate complex regional classifications and market access requirements to distinguish their high-quality output from broader commercial Yirgacheffe lots.

Innovations

The station utilizes meticulous cherry sorting and controlled fermentation processes, often ranging from 24 to 72 hours, followed by drying on raised African beds. Some operators have implemented seasonal cherry collection sites to reduce the travel burden on farmers and ensure fresher fruit delivery.
