This is a research profile, not an independently conducted farm visit. Producer and coffee relationships are shown only when the records agree. Check the research sources below for supporting evidence.

The story

Originally founded in 1956 by the López Aguilar family, the farm entered a new era in 2013-2014 when it was acquired by the Argüello family. Third-generation producer José Argüello and his sister Karen took over the neglected land, choosing to replant and focus on high-quality specialty coffee production.

Challenges

When the Argüello family acquired the property, the land had been neglected for several years, requiring them to start from scratch with replanting efforts. The farm also faces logistical challenges due to its remote location, requiring a six-hour drive from the nearest major city.

Innovations

The farm utilizes a pruning method called recepa, where a portion of trees are cut back annually to focus resources on quality. They also implement strict, data-driven fermentation protocols, measuring time, temperature, and brix levels to ensure consistency across their award-winning lots.
