Idido cooperative

The story

The Idido Cooperative was established in the late 1970s. It later joined the Yirgacheffe Farmers Cooperative Union in 2002. The cooperative operates a centralized washing station in the Idido village, serving over 1,000 member farmers across eight surrounding kebeles.

Challenges

The region faces logistical and agricultural complexities in managing production across more than 1,000 smallholder members. Additionally, the coffee sector in Ethiopia generally contends with the need for consistent quality control during the drying and fermentation stages.

Innovations

The cooperative has implemented specialized processing techniques, including mechanical de-mucilaging and the preparation of single-community lots. They also utilize specific fermentation protocols, such as soaking parchment for 24-36 hours to enhance cup quality.
