Kanzu

The story

Kanzu is a private wet mill located in the Nyamasheke district of Rwanda's Western Province. It functions as a centralized processing station that purchases coffee cherries from approximately 60 smallholder farms situated on the surrounding slopes.

Challenges

The region faces the typical agricultural difficulties of smallholder farming, including the need to balance coffee cultivation with essential sustenance crops like bananas, cassava, and sweet potatoes.

Innovations

The station employs rigorous quality control measures such as cherry flotation, dry fermentation, and sustainable water management, alongside the use of raised beds for extended drying periods of up to 30 days for natural lots.
