Kiangoi Coffee Factory

The story

The Kiangoi Factory is a wet mill operated by the Rung'eto Farmers' Cooperative Society in the Kirinyaga region of Kenya. It serves approximately 1,838 smallholder farmers who deliver their coffee cherries to the facility for processing. The factory is situated on the slopes of Mount Kenya, a region recognized for its ideal volcanic soil and climate for coffee production.

Challenges

Smallholder farmers in the region often manage very small plots of land, typically with around 100 trees each. They must navigate a competitive environment where they are free to choose between multiple local wet mills to deliver their cherries.

Innovations

The Rung'eto Farmers' Cooperative Society is noted for its meticulous systems regarding the sorting and processing of coffee cherries. The factory utilizes traditional wet processing methods to achieve the clean, flavor-dense profiles characteristic of the Kirinyaga region.
