Kiangoi Coffee Factory is a prominent wet mill located in Kenya's Kirinyaga County, serving as one of three processing facilities operated by the Rungeto Farmers Cooperative Society. It is highly regarded in specialty coffee for its meticulous washed processing of high-altitude SL28 and SL34 varieties, which consistently produce the vibrant, acidic, and fruit-forward profiles characteristic of the region.
Kiangoi Coffee Factory is a vital processing hub situated at the base of Mount Kenya in Kirinyaga County. It operates as a member of the Rungeto Farmers Cooperative Society (FCS), a collective established in 1997 following the liquidation of the Ngariama Cooperative Society. Alongside its sister factories, Kii and Karimikui, Kiangoi serves as the central point where hundreds of smallholder farmers deliver their hand-picked coffee cherries for processing, ensuring that the collective output meets the rigorous standards required for the specialty export market.
The cooperative structure is fundamental to the success of Kiangoi. Rungeto FCS is entirely farmer-owned, with thousands of active members who typically manage small plots of land—often less than one hectare—intercropped with coffee and subsistence vegetables. This cooperative model provides farmers with essential infrastructure, including access to agronomic training, pre-financing for school fees, and farm inputs, which are critical for maintaining the health of their coffee trees and the consistency of their yields.
Geographically, the factory benefits from the unique microclimate of Kirinyaga. Located at elevations ranging from approximately 1,700 to 1,900 meters above sea level, the area features rich volcanic soils and consistent rainfall. These environmental factors, combined with the cultivation of traditional Kenyan varieties such as SL28 and SL34, as well as newer cultivars like Ruiru 11 and Batian, create the ideal conditions for the complex, high-acidity flavor profiles that define the region's reputation.
Processing at Kiangoi follows the traditional, rigorous Kenyan washed method. Upon delivery, cherries are sorted to remove under-ripe or damaged fruit. The coffee is then pulped, fermented, and thoroughly washed using clean water, often sourced from local river systems. Following the wash, the parchment coffee is dried on raised beds, where it is carefully monitored to ensure even moisture content. This attention to detail during the post-harvest phase is what allows the factory to consistently produce 'AA' grade lots, highly sought after by roasters worldwide.
Beyond coffee production, the Rungeto FCS has demonstrated a commitment to economic diversification and sustainability. The society has invested in infrastructure such as dairy cooling plants and fuel stations, which help stabilize income for member families throughout the year. By leveraging Fairtrade premiums and cooperative governance, the society ensures that the financial benefits of high-quality coffee production are reinvested into the community, supporting both the farmers' livelihoods and the long-term viability of the factory.
For the specialty coffee drinker, a coffee from Kiangoi is often synonymous with the classic Kenyan profile: crisp, vibrant acidity, and distinct notes of redcurrant, hibiscus, and stone fruits. The factory's ability to maintain this quality year after year is a testament to the collective expertise of its members and the disciplined management of the Rungeto FCS. As the industry continues to prioritize traceability, Kiangoi stands as a prime example of how cooperative-led processing can bridge the gap between smallholder farmers and the global specialty market.
