La Prosperidad de Chirinos Cooperative

The story

The cooperative was founded in 1968 by 36 coffee producers in the Chirinos district of Cajamarca, Peru. It was established to help smallholder farmers overcome the challenges of remote locations and difficult logistics. Over the past five decades, it has grown into a large organization supporting hundreds of farming families across the San Ignacio and Jaén regions.

Challenges

The cooperative was originally formed to address the difficulties of operating in remote, mountainous terrain with challenging logistics. Members also face ongoing needs related to climate resilience and the requirement for consistent agronomic support to maintain quality.

Innovations

The cooperative promotes sustainability through Regenerative Organic Certified standards and programs that encourage income diversification, such as avocado farming and beekeeping. They also operate dedicated committees for women and youth leadership and maintain research plots to improve production and climate resilience.
