Murundo People's Farm

The story

The Murundo People's Farm is a collaborative initiative involving small-scale farmers located near Gihombo in the Nyamasheke district of Western Rwanda. The project is operated by Kivubelt Coffee, which was established in 2011 by Furaha Umwizeye after she returned to Rwanda with a master's degree in economics. The farm functions as a model plantation designed to promote sustainable agriculture while providing local employment and empowerment.

Challenges

Farmers in the region face difficulties related to the remote nature of their land and the logistical hurdles of consolidating coffee from many small-scale producers to ensure quality separation.

Innovations

The farm utilizes a collaborative model that consolidates coffee from smallholders to provide them with essential resources and quality control standards that might otherwise be inaccessible. This approach facilitates the production of high-quality microlots through the Murundo Coffee Washing Station.
