The story

Smallholder coffee production in Peru is characterized by a vast network of farms, with over 90% of operations covering less than 5 hectares. Historically, the industry developed from domestic consumption on the coast to an export-oriented sector facilitated by infrastructure projects like the Central Railway. Many of these small-scale producers rely on traditional shade-growing methods passed down through generations.

Challenges

Smallholders face significant pressure from persistent coffee leaf rust outbreaks and coffee borer infestations. Additionally, producers struggle with high production costs, low international market prices, and limited access to chemical inputs.

Innovations

Many smallholders are transitioning toward climate-smart agricultural practices and organic production methods. Some independent organizations and cooperatives are focusing on improving traceability and community-based social enterprise models to enhance farmer incomes.
