The full tasting
The first sip
This is one of the most beautiful cups we have tasted this year. The first sip is bright and silky, nectarine up front, a streak of lime cutting through the middle, and a soft milk chocolate landing underneath everything. The body is light but almost creamy, tea-like without ever feeling thin, and the finish goes on and on, sweet and clean to the very last drop.
What we tasted
The bag promises nectarine, lime, and milk chocolate, and every note lands with precision. The nectarine is ripe and juicy rather than tart, the lime arrives as sparkle rather than sourness, and the milk chocolate gives the whole cup a gentle, rounded base. As it cools, florals drift in, jasmine and something faintly honeyed, and the sweetness reads more like cane sugar. Brewed as a pour-over, it was flawless; the same lot through drip stayed bright and balanced, if slightly less vivid.
The story in the bag
Verve Coffee Roasters, founded in Santa Cruz, California in 2008, buys this lot through their seasonal direct-trade program. Tofik Nura comes from the Limu zone, a historic Ethiopian growing region that lives in the shadow of Yirgacheffe and Sidama, and this coffee argues powerfully that Limu deserves the same spotlight. The bag explains that East African coffees are generally produced by collections of smallholder farmers ranging from dozens to thousands, resulting in coffees greater than the sum of their parts. The roast level dial printed on the back sits just past one, and the light roast lets every bit of that origin sing.
Who this is for
Anyone who loves bright, floral, fruit-forward washed Ethiopians, and anyone yet to fall for them: this is the bag that converts people. It is also a beautiful argument for Limu as a region. We scored it 98, four point nine stars, one of the very best coffees we have reviewed.
Pour-over at a 1 to 16 ratio with a medium-light grind, water just off the boil. The clarity is stunning as a V60 and it also holds up beautifully on drip. Avoid espresso: this lot is built for brightness, not pressure.
