CENFROCAFE (Central Fronteriza del Norte de Cafetaleros) is a prominent Peruvian coffee cooperative based in Jaén, Cajamarca, representing thousands of smallholder farmers. It is significant for its role in professionalizing specialty coffee production in Peru, providing essential technical, financial, and marketing support to its members while maintaining high standards for Fair Trade and organic certifications.
Founded in 1999, CENFROCAFE began as a collective of 220 small-scale coffee farmers organized into eleven community-based associations. Over the past two decades, it has evolved into one of the largest and most influential cooperatives in Latin America, currently serving over 3,000 member families across twelve districts in the Cajamarca and Amazonas regions of Peru. Headquartered in Jaén, the organization operates with a mission to improve the livelihoods of its members through collective bargaining, access to credit, and technical agronomy support.
The cooperative’s structure is designed to provide individual smallholders with the market reach and infrastructure that would be unattainable independently. By centralizing quality control, processing oversight, and export logistics, CENFROCAFE has successfully positioned its members' coffee in the global specialty market. Their operations include an integrated European subsidiary, Cenfrocafe AG, which facilitates direct trade relationships with international roasters, ensuring that the cooperative maintains a presence throughout the supply chain.
Geographically, the cooperative benefits from the diverse microclimates of the Cajamarca region, where farms are situated at elevations ranging from 1,200 to 2,050 meters. This high-altitude environment, combined with the cultivation of varieties such as Bourbon, Caturra, Marsellesa, and Costa Rica 95, contributes to the distinct cup profiles for which the region is known. Common sensory notes associated with their lots include milk chocolate, dried fruits, caramel, and citrus, reflecting the careful stewardship of the land by its members.
Processing at the farm level is largely handled by the producers themselves, who de-pulp, wash, and dry their coffee on raised beds within solar greenhouses or, in space-constrained settings, in residential structures like attics and lofts. This decentralized processing model requires rigorous quality control workshops provided by the cooperative to ensure consistency across thousands of small lots. The cooperative’s commitment to quality has earned its members recognition as finalists in various national and international coffee competitions.
Beyond commercial success, CENFROCAFE functions as a vital social institution. It provides leadership training for youth, financial credit to cover harvest costs, and technical assistance aimed at sustainable farming practices. This holistic approach is particularly important in Cajamarca, a region historically defined by mineral wealth and mining, where the cooperative serves as a stabilizing force for agricultural communities and environmental stewardship.
CENFROCAFE is a major proponent of certified coffee, holding significant Fair Trade and organic certifications. These standards are not merely administrative; they represent the cooperative's commitment to economic transparency and environmental health. By participating in initiatives like the Cool Farm Tool Pilot Project, the organization continues to modernize its approach to climate resilience and productivity, aligning with Peru’s national coffee sector goals for the 2018-2030 period.
Today, the cooperative stands as a model for cooperative organization in Latin America. For roasters and consumers, the CENFROCAFE tag signifies a traceable, high-quality product backed by a robust support system that empowers farmers to improve their yields and quality of life. Its enduring success demonstrates the impact of organized, smallholder-led development in the specialty coffee industry.
