El Puente

Finca El Puente represents a cornerstone of modern Honduran specialty coffee, situated in the highlands of Chinacla, La Paz. The operation is led by the husband-and-wife team of Marysabel Caballero and Moises Herrera, who manage over 300 hectares of land. Their work is deeply rooted in a multi-generational legacy; Marysabel is a fourth-generation coffee producer, tracing her family's agricultural heritage back to 1907 when her great-grandfather, Don Felipe García, began cultivating coffee in the region. Her father, Don Fabio Caballero, is widely regarded as a pioneer of high-quality coffee production in Honduras, setting the stage for the modernization efforts that define the farm today.

The farm gained international prominence by shifting the perception of Honduran coffee from a bulk commodity to a high-end specialty product. This transformation was achieved through meticulous attention to detail in both cultivation and post-harvest processing. After inheriting and modernizing the family’s wet mill, Caballero and Herrera developed a comprehensive operation that allows them to maintain full control over the coffee from the cherry stage through to the final dry-milled export. This infrastructure has enabled them to experiment with diverse varieties, including Catuai, which remains their most widely planted cultivar, as well as exotic varieties like Batian.

Finca El Puente is perhaps best known for its extraordinary performance in the Cup of Excellence (CoE) competition. The farm has earned a reputation as one of the most consistently decorated names in Honduran coffee history, including an outright win in the 2016 Cup of Excellence and a second-place finish in 2005. These accolades have solidified the farm's status as a benchmark for quality, with their lots frequently sought after by world-renowned roasters who value the couple's commitment to excellence and transparency.

Beyond competition success, the farm is recognized for its dedication to social and environmental stewardship. The management team focuses heavily on improving the living and working conditions for their community, viewing their role as stewards of both the land and the people who work it. This holistic approach to farming has fostered long-term, direct-trade partnerships with international roasters, some of which have spanned nearly two decades, providing a stable pathway for their coffee to reach global markets.

In practice, the farm utilizes a variety of processing methods to highlight the unique characteristics of their harvest. This includes traditional washed processes, natural processing, and innovative techniques such as extended fermentation. By offering these diverse profiles—ranging from floral and juicy red fruit notes to complex, wine-like characteristics—they demonstrate the versatility of the La Paz terroir. Their son, Ezri Herrera, continues this family tradition, further integrating the farm into the global specialty coffee supply chain.

Today, Finca El Puente stands as a bridge between traditional Honduran coffee heritage and the future of agricultural innovation. By testing unique varieties and refining processing protocols, the farm continues to influence how coffee is produced and perceived in the region.
