Finca Aurora is a prominent, family-owned coffee estate located in the Matagalpa region of Nicaragua, managed by Dr. Enrique Ferrufino and his family. The farm is notable for its fully integrated, on-site processing operations, which allow for rigorous quality control from harvest through to milling and export.
Finca Aurora is situated in the mountainous terrain of Matagalpa, Nicaragua, a region historically significant for its coffee production since the late 19th century. The estate is owned and operated by Dr. Enrique Ferrufino, a surgeon who was born and raised on a coffee farm in the same region in 1956. In 1992, Dr. Ferrufino and his wife, Silvia, a pediatrician, entered the coffee industry, eventually acquiring Finca Aurora in 2004. The farm has since become a family-run enterprise, with the couple involving their three children in the business from a young age.
The farm spans 242 hectares, with 141 hectares currently dedicated to coffee cultivation at altitudes ranging between 1,200 and 1,400 meters above sea level. This elevation, combined with the specific microclimate of the Matagalpa highlands, provides the necessary conditions for producing high-quality Arabica coffee. The family emphasizes social responsibility, investing in their workforce through fair wages, safe housing, healthcare, and educational support.
Finca Aurora is distinguished by its status as one of the first farms in Nicaragua to feature a fully integrated, on-site coffee operation. By managing the entire post-harvest process—including pulping, washing, drying, milling, and sorting—at their own facility, known as Beneficio Finca Aurora, the family maintains direct oversight of quality control. This vertical integration ensures that the coffee is processed according to their specific standards before it is bagged for export.
The farm cultivates a variety of coffee cultivars, including Caturra, Catuaí, Obata, and Parainema. The choice of varieties like Obata is often driven by their high productivity and resistance to coffee leaf rust, a critical factor for sustainable production in the region. Processing methods are diverse, ranging from traditional fully washed techniques using ecopulpers to experimental natural processes, reflecting the farm's commitment to innovation and quality improvement.
In practice, the farm's operations are characterized by selective handpicking of cherries, followed by drying on either raised beds or patios. The resulting lots are often classified as Strictly High Grown (SHG) and European Preparation (EP), indicating high density and rigorous sorting standards. These practices have positioned Finca Aurora as a reliable producer within the Nicaraguan specialty coffee sector, frequently appearing in international offerings that highlight their commitment to environmental and social certifications, such as Rainforest Alliance (RFA).
For the roaster and the consumer, Finca Aurora represents a model of transparency and consistency. Because the farm controls the supply chain from the tree to the final bag, the traceability of their coffee is exceptionally high. This direct control allows the Ferrufino family to experiment with processing and varietals while ensuring that the social and environmental values they prioritize are upheld throughout the production cycle.
