Finca El Limoncillo

Finca El Limoncillo is a cornerstone of the Fincas Mierisch group, a multi-generational coffee enterprise with roots in Nicaragua dating back to the late 1800s. The farm was acquired in 1930 by the family, following the transition of the founder's descendant from military service to civilian life. Its name is derived from the small lemon trees that were found growing on the property at the time of its purchase. Located in the Matagalpa region, the farm sits at elevations ranging from approximately 850 to 1,450 meters above sea level, providing a diverse microclimate suitable for high-quality coffee cultivation.

The Mierisch family legacy began with Bruno Mierisch Boettiger, a German geologist who arrived in Nicaragua to assist in the construction of the national railroad. When the government could not fulfill salary payments, they provided land in the mountains of Matagalpa as compensation. This land became the foundation for the family's initial coffee ventures, such as Las Lajas, and eventually expanded into the extensive network of farms now managed by the third, fourth, and fifth generations of the Mierisch family.

El Limoncillo is distinguished by its focus on quality over quantity, a strategy adopted in response to climate change, market volatility, and the threat of coffee leaf rust. The farm has moved away from monoculture, instead cultivating a wide array of varieties including Javanica, Pacamara, Bourbon, Caturra, and Maragogipe. This varietal diversity allows the farm to experiment with different flavor profiles and adapt to the specific environmental conditions of their high-altitude plots.

Processing at El Limoncillo is a hallmark of the Mierisch family's technical expertise. The farm is well-regarded for its meticulous approach to post-harvest processing, including washed, honey, and natural methods. Their dedication to excellence has been validated on the international stage, most notably with El Limoncillo earning second place in Nicaragua's 2007/2008 Cup of Excellence competition. Such accolades have cemented the farm's reputation among specialty roasters globally.

Beyond coffee production, the farm operates with a strong emphasis on social and environmental responsibility. El Limoncillo functions as an ecotourism site, maintaining a strict commitment to the preservation of local flora and fauna.
