Kamavindi Estate

Kamavindi Estate is a prominent family-run coffee farm and processing operation situated at approximately 1,680 meters above sea level in Embu County, Kenya. The estate was founded in 1958 by the late John Njiru Mbature during the British colonial era. At its inception, the farm was restricted to just 100 coffee trees, a limitation imposed on native African growers at the time. Following Kenya's independence in 1964, these restrictions were lifted, allowing the family to expand their cultivation significantly. Today, the estate is managed by the third generation of the Mbature family, with Peter Mbature currently leading operations.

The farm's location on the windward side of Mount Kenya provides a favorable microclimate characterized by fertile volcanic soils and distinct seasonal patterns, which are essential for the development of high-quality coffee. Over the decades, the estate has grown from its modest beginnings to encompass thousands of trees. The farm currently cultivates a diverse selection of coffee varieties, including the classic Kenyan cultivars SL28 and SL34, as well as the disease-resistant Ruiru 11 and Batian, and more recently, the highly sought-after Gesha variety.

A defining feature of Kamavindi Estate is its commitment to vertical integration and quality control. In 1994, the family constructed their own private washing station on the property. This infrastructure allows the estate to maintain strict oversight of the processing cycle, ensuring consistency and the ability to produce specialized microlots. The processing methods typically involve meticulous hand-sorting, floating to remove defects, and a multi-stage fermentation process, followed by drying on raised beds under shade nets to achieve precise moisture levels.

In 2012, the estate pivoted its business model toward the specialty coffee market, focusing on direct relationships with international roasters and importers. This shift was supported by the establishment of Kamavindi Coffee Lab Ltd, which handles export logistics and quality assurance. The estate’s leadership, including Q Grader-certified personnel, emphasizes transparency and ethical practices, positioning the farm as a reliable partner for global specialty coffee buyers seeking traceable, high-scoring Kenyan lots.

The estate has gained significant recognition among specialty roasters for its ability to produce distinct, high-clarity profiles. Common flavor descriptors associated with their lots include floral notes like jasmine and honeysuckle, as well as fruit-forward characteristics such as peach, melon, blackcurrant, and crisp apple. By separating specific varieties—such as their recent SL34 and Gesha releases—the Mbature family has demonstrated a sophisticated approach to farm management that highlights the unique potential of their specific terroir.

Today, Kamavindi Estate stands as a model of longevity and adaptation in the Kenyan coffee sector. By balancing traditional agricultural practices with modern processing techniques and direct-trade initiatives, the estate continues to evolve.
