The Mbature family’s coffee legacy is centered at Kamavindi Coffee, an estate located on the southeastern slopes of Mount Kenya in Embu County. The farm was originally founded in 1958 by John Njiru and Ann Rwamba. At its inception, the farm was limited to just 100 coffee trees, which was the maximum allowed under colonial regulations at the time. Over the decades, the family has expanded their operations significantly, and today the estate manages over 10,000 trees, representing a transition from smallholder constraints to a sophisticated, independent production model.

Under the current operation of Peter Mbature, the farm has evolved into a model of direct-trade excellence. A pivotal moment in the estate's history occurred in 1994 when the family constructed their own private washing station. This infrastructure allowed the Mbature family to exert complete control over the post-harvest processing of their coffee, ensuring that quality standards are maintained from the moment of picking through to the final drying stages. This level of vertical integration is a hallmark of their commitment to specialty coffee production.

The farm’s agricultural profile is diverse, featuring a mix of traditional and modern coffee varieties. Their plantings include the classic Kenyan cultivars SL28 and SL34, which are prized for their complex acidity and flavor profiles, alongside Ruiru 11 and Batian. In recent years, the family has also experimented with newer plantings, including Gesha, which has been met with critical acclaim from specialty roasters who have monitored the trees' development since they were first established.

Processing at Kamavindi is characterized by meticulous attention to detail. Harvested cherries are hand-sorted and floated to remove defects before being depulped. The family employs a rigorous fermentation protocol, often involving a double-fermentation process: an initial dry fermentation of 18 to 20 hours, followed by a thorough washing, and a secondary 24-hour dry fermentation. This process is designed to maximize clarity and sweetness in the cup, resulting in profiles often described as having notes of red currant, citrus, plum, and dark fruits.

Beyond production, the Mbature family has invested in the broader coffee community through the establishment of the Kamavindi Coffee Lab in 2018. This facility serves as a training center, reflecting the family's dedication to education and the advancement of coffee quality within the Embu region. By fostering local expertise, the family contributes to the sustainability and professionalization of the Kenyan coffee sector, moving beyond simple cultivation to active knowledge sharing.
