Klasik Beans cooperative

Founded in 2008 by a group of producers in the Puntang region of West Java, the Klasik Beans cooperative emerged as a response to the need for sustainable, high-quality coffee production in Indonesia. The cooperative was established with a core philosophy centered on respect for both the environment and the people involved in the supply chain. By prioritizing organic farming and shade-grown techniques, Klasik Beans has sought to preserve the cultural heritage of the Sundanese region while providing a viable economic alternative to conventional, predatory trading models that often suppress farmer income.

The cooperative operates primarily in the Sundanese region of West Java, an area known for its rich volcanic soil and long history of coffee cultivation. Over the years, Klasik Beans has expanded its reach significantly, growing to include over 1,000 members. To manage this scale, the cooperative has established five dedicated wet mills located in key production areas, including Pacet, Puntang, Garut, and Ciwidey. These facilities allow the cooperative to maintain strict quality control over the processing of coffee cherries, ensuring that the final product meets the standards required for the international specialty market.

A defining characteristic of the Klasik Beans model is its commitment to social and ecological sustainability. The cooperative encourages its members to adopt good agricultural practices, with production now reaching nearly 100% organic certification. This focus on sustainability extends beyond the farm gate; the cooperative is deeply involved in educational initiatives, including the 'Klasik Beans Experience' project. This project promotes coffee tourism and serves as a platform for sharing sustainable farming knowledge with other producers across Indonesia, Thailand, and the Philippines.
