La Colombe Coffee Roasters was established in 1994 by founders Todd Carmichael and JP Iberti, who launched the company with the guiding premise that 'America deserves better coffee.' The brand originated in Philadelphia, which remains the hub of its roasting operations, and has since grown from a local boutique cafe into a nationally recognized specialty coffee entity. Over the decades, the company has been credited as a pioneer in the third-wave coffee revolution, a movement characterized by a focus on the culinary aspects of coffee, transparent sourcing, and elevated preparation methods.

The company’s operational model centers on a vertically integrated approach to the coffee supply chain. La Colombe emphasizes ethical, long-term trade relationships with coffee growers, aiming to source high-quality beans while maintaining a commitment to social responsibility. This sourcing philosophy is paired with a rigorous roasting program that seeks to balance traditional techniques with modern innovation, serving both wholesale partners—including hotels and restaurants—and its own network of retail cafes.

Innovation has been a hallmark of the brand’s growth, particularly in the ready-to-drink (RTD) sector. La Colombe gained significant industry attention for the development of the Draft Latte, which is marketed as the first-ever textured cold latte in a can. This product line helped the company expand its reach beyond traditional cafe settings into convenience stores and national retail chains, supported by strategic distribution partnerships, such as a long-term agreement with Molson Coors initiated in 2020.

Throughout its history, La Colombe has attracted significant institutional investment to fuel its expansion. In 2014, the company secured a Series A investment from Goode Partners. By 2023, the company reached a major milestone when it was acquired by the Greek yogurt brand Chobani for $900 million. This acquisition was financed through a combination of cash, a $550 million term loan, and the conversion of a minority equity stake previously held by Keurig Dr Pepper into Chobani equity.

Following the acquisition, La Colombe has continued to operate as part of the Chobani family, leveraging the parent company's resources to scale its production and distribution. Recent developments include significant capital investments in manufacturing infrastructure, such as a multi-million dollar expansion project in Norton Shores, Michigan, intended to increase capacity for its growing portfolio of coffee products.

Today, La Colombe maintains a presence across multiple channels, including direct-to-consumer e-commerce, retail cafes in major U.S. cities, and widespread availability in grocery and convenience retail. Despite its transition into a large-scale corporate subsidiary, the brand continues to emphasize its roots in specialty coffee, maintaining its identity as a roaster that prioritizes both the technical quality of the cup and the ethical treatment of the farmers within its supply chain.
