METAD Agricultural Development PLC, commonly known as METAD, is a prominent Ethiopian coffee company headquartered in Addis Ababa. Founded in 2011 by Aman Adinew, the company was established to modernize the Ethiopian coffee sector by focusing on traceability, sustainability, and high-quality production. The name METAD is derived from the initials of the founder's parents, Metasebia and Adinew, reflecting a deep-rooted family legacy in the coffee industry that dates back to the era of Muluemebet Emiru, the founder's grandmother and a pioneering figure in Ethiopian history.

The company operates under a 'seed-to-cup' philosophy, managing its own coffee plantations while also overseeing a significant outgrower program. This program supports over 10,000 local smallholder farmers across key coffee-growing regions, including the Hambela District in the Guji Zone and the Gedeb District in the Gedeo Zone. By providing these farmers with resources and market access, METAD aims to ensure fair remuneration and consistent quality, addressing historical inefficiencies in the Ethiopian coffee supply chain.

Quality control is a cornerstone of METAD’s operations. In 2013, the company achieved a major milestone when its METAD/Kabu Coffee Quality Control Laboratory became the first privately owned laboratory in Africa to be certified by the Specialty Coffee Association of America (SCAA). This facility allows the company to grade and analyze coffee with international precision, ensuring that their exports meet the stringent expectations of the global specialty market.

METAD is known for its commitment to sustainable practices, with many of its operations holding Organic and UTZ certifications. Their processing methods are highly technical, involving multiple stages of mechanical sorting followed by manual selection to remove defects. This meticulous attention to detail has been instrumental in bringing international recognition to specific origins, such as the Hambela region, which has gained significant prestige among specialty roasters worldwide.
