Sarchimor represents a significant achievement in coffee breeding, designed to address the persistent threat of coffee leaf rust (Hemileia vastatrix) while maintaining the quality standards required for specialty markets. The lineage of Sarchimor is a deliberate cross between the Timor Hybrid and the Villa Sarchi variety. The Timor Hybrid itself is a natural cross between Coffea arabica and Coffea canephora (robusta), which provides the genetic foundation for the plant's notable resistance to fungal diseases. By crossing this resilient hybrid with Villa Sarchi—a dwarf mutation of the Bourbon variety discovered in Costa Rica—breeders successfully introduced rust resistance into a plant that retains the compact stature and cup profile of a high-quality arabica.

The development of Sarchimor lines was largely driven by research institutions, including the Tropical Research Institute-Coffee Rust Research Centre (IICT-CIFC) in Portugal and various national coffee institutes. Because Sarchimor is a group of pure-line cultivars rather than a single, uniform variety, it encompasses several distinct selections such as IAPAR 59, Tupi, and Obata. Beyond their resistance to coffee leaf rust, some Sarchimor lines have also demonstrated resistance to coffee berry disease, making them a practical choice for producers looking to reduce the need for chemical fungicides and mitigate the risk of total crop loss.
