Tesfaye Bekele

Tesfaye Bekele is a central figure in the development of the Guji specialty coffee region in Ethiopia. His journey into coffee began after he spent years working for the Ethiopian government in natural resource management. Following devastating bushfires that razed large areas of forest in the Odo Shakisso woreda, Tesfaye observed local farmers attempting to plant corn on the cleared land. Fearing that such agricultural practices would lead to severe soil erosion, he established Suke Quto in the early 2000s as a forest conservation project, demonstrating that coffee could be grown in a way that preserves the local ecosystem.

Tesfaye’s influence extends beyond his own land. He is credited as a key pioneer who helped shift the Guji region from a landscape dominated by cattle farming to one of Ethiopia's most respected coffee-producing areas. By encouraging local smallholders to plant coffee trees, he provided them with a sustainable, high-value alternative to traditional crops. His efforts were bolstered by long-term partnerships with international specialty coffee importers, which helped bring Guji coffee to the global market and established it as a distinct, high-quality origin.

Suke Quto, located at high elevations between 1,800 and 2,200 meters, now represents a significant operation that includes the main farm and a washing station serving hundreds of outgrowers. The farm is known for producing coffee with classic Guji profiles, characterized by notes of stone fruit, citrus, florals, and caramel. The primary varieties cultivated on the farm include indigenous Ethiopian heirlooms such as Welicho and Kurume. These coffees are frequently recognized for their quality, including accolades such as wins in the Good Food Awards.

Beyond production, Tesfaye is noted for his commitment to social and environmental responsibility. His operations are often certified organic and Rainforest Alliance, reflecting his background in natural resource management. He is also a proponent of education and community support, having invested in local infrastructure, including the construction of a school for the children of his workers. His approach to farming is described as innovative, with a continuous focus on improving processing techniques and the livelihoods of his community.

Tesfaye’s work is often cited as a model for sustainable coffee farming. By integrating his professional expertise in forestry with his passion for coffee, he has created a system that balances economic viability for farmers with the preservation of the natural environment. His long-standing relationships with roasters and importers have allowed him to maintain a consistent presence in the specialty market, ensuring that the Guji region remains a benchmark for quality.
