Editorial illustrationMaragogype
Maragogype is a distinct Arabica variety characterized by its unusually large leaves, cherries, and seeds, which have earned it the common nickname of elephant bean. It is a natural mutation of the Typica variety that is prized for its unique cup profile, though it is often difficult to cultivate due to its low yields and susceptibility to coffee leaf rust. Because of these agricultural challenges, many farmers have replaced it with more productive varieties, making it a rare and sought-after specialty coffee. Beyond its own production, the variety is genetically significant as a parent to well-known hybrids such as Pacamara and Maracaturra.
The variety was first discovered in 1870 near the municipality of Maragogipe in the Bahia region of Brazil. It is a spontaneous natural mutation of the Typica variety caused by a single dominant gene that affects the physical size of the plant and its fruit.
Soft and mild — gentle acidity, light body despite the giant beans; a smooth, easygoing cup.
Very large trees and cherries; low yields.
Niche-market appeal and gentle, agreeable cups that some markets prize.
