The story
The Alvarez family has been cultivating coffee in El Salvador for over 100 years across four generations. The farms, La Reforma and Santa Maria, were established in 1892 by Rafael Alvarez Lalinde, who immigrated from Colombia and brought coffee seeds to the Santa Ana volcano region. Today, the fourth generation of the family continues to manage these neighboring farms.
Challenges
The farms have historically navigated the complexities of land inheritance, which led to the original estate being divided into smaller parcels.
Innovations
The mill utilizes a combination of modern technology and traditional, environmentally friendly processing techniques, including drying coffee on clay patios or raised beds.
