Abana Estate is a prominent coffee producer situated in the southwestern region of Ethiopia, an area historically significant as the birthplace of Arabica coffee. The name 'Abana' translates to 'Our Fathers' in Arabic, a title chosen by the founding Omran family to honor the deep-rooted heritage and traditional practices of wild-grown coffee in the region. The estate was established in 2009, beginning with the development of a 300-hectare plot of land near the village of Gera, with the goal of producing high-quality specialty coffee while fostering local community development.

The farm is managed by the Omran family, led by founder Peter Omran and his sons, Michael and Chris. Before establishing the estate, Peter Omran spent over two decades working in humanitarian aid and development projects across Africa and the Middle East. This background in social work remains a core pillar of the estate's operations, where the family implements various outreach programs designed to support the local population surrounding the farm. The family’s transition into coffee production was driven by a desire to combine their passion for the beverage with their commitment to social responsibility.

Geographically, the estate benefits from an ideal environment for specialty coffee, with elevations ranging from 1,930 to 2,200 meters above sea level. The farm is characterized by old-growth highland forests that provide a natural canopy for the coffee trees, maintaining a healthy ecosystem that supports diverse animal species, including local Colobus monkeys. The estate utilizes sustainable farming techniques, such as water-recycling wet mills and natural waste filtration systems, to minimize its environmental footprint while maintaining the integrity of the surrounding landscape.

Abana Estate primarily cultivates Ethiopian heirloom varieties, which are hand-picked and sorted to ensure quality. While the estate is known for its traditional washed process—often resulting in flavor profiles featuring notes of black tea, apricot, and grapefruit—it also produces highly regarded sun-dried natural coffees. These natural lots are frequently noted for their complex, fruit-forward profiles, often exhibiting characteristics of black cherry, strawberry, and chocolate. Specific lots from the estate are sometimes named after local landmarks, such as the Anderacha river, which borders the farm.

The estate’s production is defined by its focus on high-altitude, shade-grown conditions, which allow the coffee cherries to mature slowly, enhancing the development of complex aromatic and flavor compounds. By prioritizing both environmental stewardship and the welfare of the local community, Abana Estate has positioned itself as a model for sustainable coffee production in Ethiopia.
