The story of the Aguirre family in coffee is anchored by Finca El Injerto, a 750-hectare estate located in the mountainous region of Huehuetenango, Guatemala. The farm’s history dates back to 1874 when Jesús Aguirre Panamá acquired the land. Initially, the property focused on diverse crops such as sugarcane for panela, corn, beans, and tobacco. It was not until around 1900 that the family transitioned into coffee cultivation, naming the farm 'El Injerto' after a fruit native to the region.
Since 1956, the farm has been under the management of the third and fourth generations of the Aguirre family, specifically Arturo Aguirre Escobar and his son, Arturo Aguirre Jr. Under their leadership, the farm evolved from a modest operation producing approximately 300 bags of parchment coffee into a global benchmark for specialty coffee quality and sustainable agricultural practices. Their management style emphasizes environmental stewardship, with over half of the estate dedicated to a protected natural forest reserve.
The Aguirres are widely recognized for their commitment to quality and innovation in processing. They have been instrumental in the development of direct trade models, most notably maintaining a partnership with Stumptown Coffee Roasters that began in 2003. This relationship helped elevate the profile of Huehuetenango coffee on the international stage, showcasing the potential of high-elevation Bourbon varieties grown between 1,500 and 1,900 meters.
Their dedication to excellence is evidenced by consistent recognition in the industry. Finca El Injerto has achieved significant success in the Cup of Excellence (COE) competition, including being awarded 'Best Coffee of Guatemala' in 2021 and securing second place in the 2022 COE. These accolades reflect the family's rigorous approach to selective harvesting and meticulous post-harvest processing techniques.
