IHCAFE 90 is a hybrid coffee cultivar developed by the Instituto Hondureño del Café (IHCAFE) in Honduras. Released in the 1990s, the variety was engineered as part of a national strategy to support smallholder producers by providing a plant that could withstand the environmental pressures of the region while maintaining high productivity. It belongs to the Catimor group, a classification of cultivars that share a common genetic lineage derived from the Timor Hybrid—a spontaneous cross between Coffea arabica and Coffea canephora (Robusta)—and the Caturra variety, a natural dwarf mutation of Bourbon.

The genetic architecture of IHCAFE 90 was specifically selected to combine the compact, high-yielding nature of Caturra with the disease-resistant traits inherited from the Timor Hybrid. This lineage allowed the plant to thrive in lower-altitude environments where traditional Arabica varieties often struggled. While it can produce acceptable cup profiles—sometimes noted for flavors like date, citrus rind, or plum—it often lacks the complex acidity and nuanced flavor profiles associated with higher-quality heirloom or traditional cultivars. Consequently, it is frequently utilized in commercial-grade production rather than high-end specialty segments.
