Lempira is a Catimor-lineage coffee variety, created through a cross between the Timor Hybrid (832/1) and the compact, high-yielding Caturra. Developed by the Instituto Hondureño del Café (IHCAFE), it was engineered specifically to address the urgent need for disease-resistant cultivars in Honduras. By combining the robust, rust-resistant genetics of the Timor Hybrid—a natural Arabica-Robusta cross—with the productive, dwarf stature of Caturra, IHCAFE produced a plant that allowed farmers to maintain yields in the face of mounting environmental pressures. For years, it stood as the primary defense for Honduran producers against the devastating impacts of coffee leaf rust (Hemileia vastatrix).

In the field, Lempira is characterized by its dwarf or compact growth habit and bronze-tipped new leaves. It was prized for its ability to thrive in warmer zones and acidic soils, making it a versatile workhorse for the diverse microclimates found across Honduran coffee regions like Copán, Comayagua, and Montecillos. The narrative of Lempira shifted dramatically in 2017 when reports emerged that the variety was succumbing to rust infections. Following investigations by IHCAFE and subsequent DNA fingerprinting by World Coffee Research, it was confirmed that Lempira had lost its resistance to the disease. While it can produce quality results when grown at higher altitudes, it is frequently viewed as unremarkable compared to more traditional, albeit more fragile, varieties like Bourbon or Typica.
