METAD Agricultural Development PLC is a family-run coffee enterprise that represents a significant bridge between Ethiopia’s historic coffee heritage and the modern specialty coffee industry. The company was founded by Aman Adinew, who previously served as the Chief Operations Officer for the Ethiopia Commodity Exchange (ECX). The name 'METAD' is derived from the initials of his parents, Metasebia and Adinew, reflecting the company's deep roots in family legacy and national history.

The family’s connection to Ethiopian agriculture traces back to Aman’s grandmother, Muluemebet Emiru, who was Africa’s first female pilot. Following World War II, she was granted land in Harar by Emperor Haile-Selassie, where she began farming coffee. After the land was nationalized during the Derg regime, the family’s agricultural legacy was paused until Aman Adinew established METAD to revitalize and modernize the family’s involvement in the sector, aiming to change the narrative of Ethiopian coffee exportation.

METAD operates with a 'seed to cup' philosophy, maintaining strict quality control across its own estates and processing facilities. The company owns the renowned Hambela estate, which is notable for being a single-estate farm that also functions as a washing station for the surrounding community. This model is distinct in Ethiopia, where coffee is traditionally processed at centralized washing stations that aggregate cherries from many small, independent farms rather than growing them on-site.

Beyond its own estates, METAD manages an extensive outgrower program that supports over 10,000 smallholder farmers across the Gedeo and Guji zones. By providing these farmers with access to modern processing techniques and quality-focused infrastructure, METAD has helped elevate the consistency and profile of coffees from regions like Yirgacheffe and Gedeb. The company operates the first Coffee Quality Institute (CQI)-certified laboratory in Africa, ensuring that every lot meets rigorous international standards.

Their initiatives include providing healthcare for employees and offering university scholarships.
