The Mierisch family’s coffee legacy began in the late 1800s with Bruno Mierisch Boettiger, a German geologist who arrived in Nicaragua to assist in the construction of the National Railroad. When the government could not pay his salary in full, he was granted land in the mountains of Matagalpa as compensation. This land, originally named Las Lajas, was initially used to grow lemons, but in 1908, the family planted their first coffee trees, setting the foundation for a multi-generational agricultural enterprise.

Today, the family operates under the banner of Fincas Mierisch, managing nine farms in Nicaragua and three in Honduras. The business is currently overseen by the third, fourth, and fifth generations of the family. This continuity has allowed them to transition from traditional commodity farming to a highly specialized model that emphasizes quality control, environmental stewardship, and community-driven practices across their diverse estates, such as Finca Limoncillo and Finca San José.
