What does raspberry mean in coffee?
Does coffee contain raspberry?
Not necessarily. Raspberry is a fruit-aroma comparison; actual fruit additions must be verified independently.
Why can coffee taste like raspberry?
Raspberry suggests a tart or lively red-berry character, not simply citrus acidity with a color association or proof of one ester.
Where might people describe this note?
May be described in individual lots from different origins and processing styles. It is not a proven marker of Kenyan SL varieties or natural processing.
How to taste for raspberry
If available, smell fresh or unsweetened frozen raspberries separately from the coffee. Compare the fruit's aroma with the dry grounds, brewed cup and a small sip at a comfortable drinking temperature. Taste again after the coffee cools. Distinguish a berry-like aroma from bright acidity or general fruitiness, and note whether the comparison is closer to fresh fruit, dried fruit or jam. Do not infer a variety, country, fermentation method or added fruit from the resemblance.

Your raspberry tasting notebook
Can you actually perceive a raspberry-like note? Brew a plain coffee, then describe it in three stages. Write your own impressions before reading the tasting notes on its bag. A descriptor is not evidence of a coffee's origin, ingredients, processing, or quality.
- Smell the freshly ground coffee. Describe what you notice without guessing the coffee's origin.
- Smell and carefully sip the brewed coffee after it is comfortable to taste. Notice aroma, acidity, sweetness and texture.
- Try the cup again as it cools. Does the descriptor become clearer, fade or change? Compare your notes.
Notes stay in this browser's local storage until cleared; they are not submitted, scored, published or used as evidence for our reviews. For professional methodology see the SCA flavor-wheel guide.

How we use sources
This is our editorial description of a sensory comparison. The independent SCA/WCR materials below explain how tasters develop a shared vocabulary; they do not verify the particular coffee origins, biochemical causes, processing methods or frequency claims on this page.
No descriptor-specific research citation has been verified for this entry yet. Treat specific causal and origin associations as editorial guidance, not as scientifically established facts.
