Released in 2010, this F1 hybrid was the result of a collaborative effort between the French research institute CIRAD, the Tropical Agricultural Research and Higher Education Center (CATIE) in Costa Rica, and a regional network of national coffee institutes known as PROMECAFE. Its development was a strategic response to the urgent need for varieties that could maintain high productivity without sacrificing the sensory attributes prized by the specialty coffee market.

The genetic lineage of Centroamericano is rooted in a cross between the rust-resistant Sarchimor T-5296 and the Ethiopian landrace variety Rume Sudan. This specific pairing was chosen to leverage 'hybrid vigor,' a phenomenon where the offspring exhibits superior performance compared to its parents. By combining the disease-resistant traits of the Sarchimor—a cross between Timor Hybrid and Villa Sarchi—with the complex, high-quality profile of Rume Sudan, breeders successfully bypassed the traditional trade-off where disease-resistant plants often produced inferior cup quality.

In the field, Centroamericano is characterized by its high yield potential, with evaluations showing production increases of 22–47% over standard regional varieties. The plant is well-adapted to agroforestry systems and performs best when cultivated in healthy soil at elevations above 1,300 meters.
