Wush Wush

Wush Wush is a rare Ethiopian landrace variety that has gained significant attention in the specialty coffee industry for its complex, floral, and intensely sweet cup profile. It is characterized by low yields and a lack of disease resistance, which makes it a challenging and expensive variety for farmers to cultivate. Because of these production difficulties and its distinct sensory qualities, it is often treated as a premium, high-value crop. The variety is highly sought after by producers and roasters looking to offer unique, high-scoring coffees that stand out from more common commercial hybrids.

Where did it come from?

The variety is named after the town of Wushwush, located in the Keffa region of southwestern Ethiopia, where it is considered a regional landrace. It was introduced to South America, particularly Colombia, approximately 25 to 30 years ago, where it has since been propagated by specialty coffee farmers.

What does it tend to taste like?

Intensely tropical — mango and passion-fruit character with floral perfume.

Plant characteristics

Compact plants adapted to high altitude; low yields.

Why producers grow it

A cult following among experimental buyers: tiny supply plus a striking cup equals some of the highest per-pound prices traded informally.
